Beard and Once Upon a Time in a Forest to Toronto’s Hot Docs
The biggest documentary film event in North America takes place April 25–May 5, 2024.

Beard, a short documentary film by Kristiina Karsten, Otso Reunanen and Silja Salmi, will have its world premiere in Hot Docs. In the film, priest Late Mäntylä talks about their relationship to gender while make-up artist Kata Launonen shows them how to create a beard. Beard premiered last month at Tampere Film Festival’s National Competition.
Also in the Shorts Program, Samira Elagoz and Z Walsh bring their film You Can’t Get What You Want But You Can Get Me which premiered earlier this year in Rotterdam.
Once Upon a Time in a Forest, by Virpi Suutari, lands already on its third significant festival. The film premiered in CPH:DOX, and then traveled to Visions du Réel in Switzerland. In Toronto, it will screen in the LAND|SKY|SEA Competition, aimed at films about our relationship to nature. Once Upon a Time in a Forest follows a group of environmental activists.
