Iiris is an 8 year old moody girl, who desperately needs attention from her mother. Working as a clerk at a local grocery shop, Iiris’ single mother Saara’s mind wanders somewhere else: economically, there’s no room for another child in the family, but none the less, she is pregnant to Mikko, an unemployed hobbyist-fisherman, with whom Saara has a fresh relationship with. In addition to that, Saara’s sister Eeva, whom Saara has always envied, is sick with difficult cancer.
One day Mikko brings some fish to Saara and Iiris. Iiris makes it her task to save the life of a small perch, that’s barely alive. Iiris’ unwavering faith in the survival of the poor fish and her fight to save it end up absorbing Saara as well and makes Saara open her eyes and realize that maybe all hope isn’t lost yet.
Sometimes life gives us more than we think we can carry. Everything that’s important is here and now.
