Description:
’You took everything from me, but you won’t take my voice!’
Olavi Virta is a film about the all-time favourite singer in Finland.
A man whose dreams were interrupted by war, a man who rose from poverty all the way to the top and became an artist that was dearly loved by the Finnish people. A man who performed both on stage and in films and who finally lost everything but his unique voice.
It is a film about a man who loved beautiful women and who was loved by beautiful women.
A man who enjoyed speed, American cars, applause, and alcohol.
After the war, the Finnish people wanted eagerly to forget about the bad times; they wanted to dance, party, dream, and love. Olavi Virta responded to this demand, and hundreds of recordings and evergreen songs were born.
This era marked by a pulsating and passionate thirst for life, the fifties and its fresh winds, transformed the whole world, including Finland.
However, huge success always takes its toll, and dear is the price of the song.
As time went on and new stars took the stage, it was time for the old ones to step aside.
It was only after losing everything, including his family, when Olavi Virta realised that the love of his life had been there the whole time, but it was already too late.
After he became seriously ill, Olavi Virta had to learn all over again how to walk, talk, and sing.
He got up on the stage, leaning on his walking stick as the contemptuous audience made fun of him and laughed at him, but when he started singing, the crowd quieted down and tears glistened in their eyes.
The master was back, one more time.
