Upper class youngsters Lucie, Eccu and Cedi are enjoying their carefree youth in the summer of 1917. Finland has gained its independence and life is good. But the following winter, the country is plunged into civil war when the starving lower classes rebel. Eccu and Cedi are caught in bloody battles. At the same time but elsewhere, Allu – a young labourer – joins his father in the ranks of the socialist rebels as they confiscate food and weapons.
The socialist Reds lose, and the capitalist Whites seek revenge. Peace returns slowly to the land. Jazz and the happy 30´s arrive in Finland. Eccu is wracked by guilt and an unrequited love of Lucie. Cedi is emotionless until it all spills out at once. Lucie falls in love for the one and only time in her life – with Allu, to whom the difference in their social castes is too much. To him, Helsinki will always be two cities. Gradually, the scars left by the war fade away.
