Orenda

Details

Challenging some of the most fascinating questions of our inexplicable existence, the story of Orenda unravels on a small lighthouse island in a remote archipelago, where two women and their mutual past is about to collide.

Nora, a successful opera singer, arrives on the island as her husband has committed suicide and had wished to be buried there. Natalia, a priest estranged from the church, has isolated herself on the same island and becomes overtly disrupted from Nora’s presence. Their mutual past, the deceased man, is something they need to face together, if they can only find the right words to do it.

The women offer each other both guilt and redemption, all bound by love, faith, and violence – the eternal trinity where one element cannot exist without the other.

Exploring the themes of guilt and grace, the destinies of two women intertwine into a tense emotional thriller set on a remote island. The new film by highly established director Pirjo Honkasalo stars a recent Golden Globe nominee Alma Pöysti and Pirkko Saisio.
