Defiant
UhmaDetails
Defiant is the story of 17-year-old Vilma, a child protective services client who ends up in a boarding school and rebels against the violent staff and a system that has forgotten the child's best interests. The film is based on real events in 2010s Finland, where children labeled as hopeless cases are confined to institutions even stricter than prisons, where they don't receive the psychiatric services they need, and sometimes not even the legally required basic education. Despite its heavy subject matter, Defiant is also a hopeful coming-of-age story of a teenage girl and a warm portrayal of friendship among young people.
